WordBook English Dictionary and Thesaurus App Reviews

31 Customer Reviews:

I typed in a simple word like “headshot” and no definition within the context of promotional photograph was given. The only thing that came up were other words associated like photography and portraits. Since my quest to define HEADSHOT and acquire certain criteria regarding the use of HEADSHOTS came up empty, I consider this app a waste of money and will delete it. There is no telling what other information is lacking.

Where is puzzle solver? I use Wordbook on my iPod almost every day for the excellent puzzle solver feature. Very disapointed it is not included in the Mac version. Dictionary feature is excellent as always for Wordbook but I was hoping for a compleat app. Any hope for an update?

Ive been using this app on my iPad for the better part of a year and was delighted to see the developer had ported a Mac OS X version. I write and depend on having an assortment of reference materials at my disposal. This is one of those reference works. I typically dont like to use a word that I cant correctly pronounce, so I rely on WordBooks pronunciation recordings to get it right. WordBooks interface is clean and doesnt obscure the reference material. I recommmend WordBook to anyone who requires a talking dictionary of the English language. For writing, its an indepensible app.

As the title states, its outstanding. I use it quite a lot on my iPhone and iPad, and now I use on my Mac. Three requests for future updates. 1. Add pronunciations for plurals, for example, vertebra and vertebrae or villus and villi. 2. Add the ability to organize bookmarks in folders by topic, for example, business, economy, medicine, etc. 3. Add the sync feature across multiple devices via Wi-Fi, like Things, or Dropbox, like 1Password. Again, many compliments to developers on the fine job they have done. It is an irreplaceable learning tool for everyone whose native language in not English.

Pleasant to use !

Great definitions with thesaurus and word origin information, audio pronunciations with the real voice. Awesome search user interface.

This app just doesnt intergrate well into my workflow. There isnt a plugin, extension or apple script that enables this to have the same functionality as the Macs dictionary. Moreover, copy/paste is cumbersome. Also, I wish it synced my favorite words with the iOS devices. Where is the ability to add other sources? The iOS devices are superior to this app.

The pronunciation is a great feature of this lightweight app. I have 3 minor quibbles: 1) Unlike the standard dictionary app, this app does not load words in real time. You have to press enter after typing the word. 2) The app switches back to dictionary mode after each word search. If you use the thesaurus feature a lot, it becomes aggravating. 3) Look and feel of OS X Lion would be nice, the interface is efficient but a bit dated.

If youre looking for a stand-alone dictionary this is better than the built-in one for OS X. The database is larger (as is the thesaurus) comes with an etymological dictionary, professional pronounciation - though you need to be online in order to use it. Ive been using the program for a few days and it has features separating it from other dictionary apps Ive tried out on the mac platform.

Although this has been my preferred dictionary (over the Dictionary app native to OS X) for some time, I have been increasingly astounded by the omission of common words. I wish Id kept a list, but it took a while to realize that this flaw was significant, rather than a rare anomaly. Today I looked up "whether," which is inexplicably absent. This word is neither obscure nor inconsequential, having two homonyms (wether and weather) which lead to common misuse. Bottom line: a dictionary app which omits common words is fundamentally flawed and should be regarded as such.

When I entered spell checker in the Apps Store search box Wordbook came up, and I got it. It has a great spell checker that also gives you a list of suggestions which is really what I wanted. Its main features are the Dictionary and the Thesaurus which are great. The Dictionary also includes an online spoken pronunciation voice which is great for individuals where english is the second language. But the spelling of words correctly was my main interest. I really like this program!

There is no audio after Restoring Files from Time Capsule

I checked the audio settings, and reinstalled the app, but nothing helps.

The app works flawlessly with a clean and beautiful interface. Love the real voice recorded in every single word in the huge database. This is the one of my most used application.

I recently found the WordBook app for iPad and iPhone and have fallen in love with them. I really appreciate being able to create links to external online dictionaries in order to get more lexiconographers views on words, usage, etc. The only reason I give this Mac app four stars is because this very appealing feature, i.e. allowing the user to create links to external sites, is not available here. As soon as it is, which I really hope is soon, then I will happily give it five stars. If this is currently possible, please show me how so I can use on my Mac. Otherwise, great app!
